About
Artist statement
I approach my paintings through applying many layers of oil paints mixed with cold wax medium using various tools and techniques. Throughout this process, I selectively scrape, scratch, and dissolve layers as they are built to reveal what lies beneath.
The experience of a place is the starting point for my paintings. The meaning and the mood of the painting unfolds intuitively and abstractly as many layers of paints are added and subtracted, and as colors, shapes, textures, and marks are evolved throughout a delicate dance of chance and control. In this process, I stop short of making the work immediately recognizable, leaving room for the viewer to interpret and explore.
My intention is to capture the essence of the place and the feelings tied to it, to tell a different story behind the surface, to express the interplay of what’s passed and what remains, and to expose the contrast of emotions.
